avocado-829092_1280The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics have named March as the official National Nutrition Month. The goal of National Nutrition Month is to educate Americans about the health benefits of practicing smart eating habits, eating organic and fresh foods, and abstaining from unhealthy foods. National Nutrition Month also helps to encourage Americans to exercise on a daily basis.

With spring on the horizon, exercising outdoors and eating locally has never been easier. For those of you still sticking to your New Years Resolutions, National Nutrition Month will help you keep the momentum going by reminding you about the benefits of eating healthy and exercising regularly.

Here are 4 ways that you can celebrate National Nutrition Month:

  1. Hydrate: Drinking water is proven to help speed up your metabolism, as well as alleviate cramps and headaches. If you’re exercising, it’s also important to make sure you’re well hydrated, as it will help your body recover and prevent you from being too sore the next day. Different studies suggest varying recommended water intake but try to shoot for at least one gallon of water each day.
  2. Exercise Daily: A lot of people just don’t like going to the gym, so if you’re one of these people, try activities like yoga, boxing, pick-up basketball or hiking. These are all fun ways to workout that are much more enjoyable than the gym for most people.
  3. Improve Your Diet: Changing your diet doesn’t have to be drastic. Try to cook for yourself instead of doing take-out. This will force you to understand what ingredients you’re consuming. Stay away from frozen foods and try to reduce your red meat consumption. Instead, stick to the perimeter at the grocery store and avoid the aisles, as this is where you will typically find foods with artificial ingredients.
  4. Change Your Eating Habits: Improving the quality of the foods you eat is just part of the equation. Try to avoid eating late at night and make sure you eat breakfast in the morning. This will provide you with plenty of energy in the morning, ensuring you’re productive at your school or place of employment.
